My most hated ex has always been ex-presso. Ugh! It's like nails on a chalkboard!
I heard another one yesterday... ex-scaped, as in, "He ex-scaped police custody."

Re: tell us about your most hated ex
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:48 AMQuestion to my daughter: "Are you ex-pecting?"
Proud of her answer - "No, I'm still pregnant." -

Re: tell us about your most hated ex
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:55 AMoh, and I thought we were going to discuss our ex's!!!
lots of fun stories there!
like the gal who told me that she was into heavily into witchcraft. I was like, "oh, ok..." and then I found out she was into, hmmmm, let us say, "funky trip X" and I said, "oh, ok..." and then I found out that she was heavily into guns. And then I said to myself..."hmmm, funky trip X, witchcraft and guns.....uh...time to get out of Dodge!!!!!"
sorry, don't have a hated "ex" word...
exigent has always been a little funky for me. Every time I hear that word in a sentence, I figure something dire is going to come after it...

Re: tell us about your most hated ex
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 8:13 AMWow, this one didn't go quite as I'd hoped. I was trying to look for other examples of people incorrectly pronouncing an "ex" sound where it does not belong. Ah, the best laid plans going astray again. -

Most hated ax
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 12:41 PMI have a peeve about ax instead of ask. Kind of interesting actually, the s and k sounds are just switched, a k s instead of a s k.
anyways, like fingernails on the proverbial chalkboard. -

Re: Most hated ax
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 11:51 PMI saw a hair salon offering "extentions" today... does that count? -
-
Re: Most hated ax
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 6:30 AMHair extentions - Hmm, close. I'm thinking it would sound pretty much the same, so probably a spelling error rather than pronunciation. But, good one!
I just wonder if there really are any more. I mean, we all know about ex-presso, but I can't come up with much else. -

Re: your most hated ex -depends on where you live
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:46 PMSure does depend on where you live.
'Round here aren't too many, but I can drive about 30 miles and there's "ex" for ec, "hit" for it, and "axe" for ask.
Lady described an errant vehicle impacting her parked vehicle thus: "Hit come up up fast thisaway, and hit hit hit right in the rear." Three "hits" in a row; noun, verb, noun. Liked that so much I wrote hit down.
Then there's "warsh" for wash, which get's really weird because you hear "I warshed the car down at the carwash". In a compound word it's "wash", alone it's "warsh". Go figure.

Re: tell us about your most hated ex
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 11:08 PMApropos Amy's earlier post: there is a tech trainer at the law firm where I work who mispronounces it "excetera" and is unable to get through a class without using the word at least two dozen times. It's an effort for me not to jump up and yell "Et! ET!!"
