How do you spell "a" or "ehn"... (Obviously I don't know how to write it so ...)
For example when you ask, "Hey, how was that movie?" and the askee shrugs their shoulders and replies, "Eh", meaning not good, not bad, just so-so, take it or leave it. "Eh."
But it's not "eh" to my ears, it's more like a short a and there's an n in there. Is there a spelling for this that you know or would know when you read it, something that people commonly use? Like the difference between "Yea" and "Yeah" ?
This is for dialogue in a play and we've been arguing about this and can't find anything on the interweb to prove each other wrong. I know I've read this before and recognized it when I saw it, but now I don't remember where.
If anybody has any thoughts and ideas, they are very welcome!

Re: how do you spell...
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 9:02 AMSounds to me like you might be dealing with "eh" with a regional dialect thrown in. Where I live, I hear, read, write and say "eh." I'm not sure about the "n" inflection. That's unfamiliar to me.
Or sometimes I say "meh" or "geh" for various degrees of blah or shock. "Meh" is either more bored or more bad. "Geh" is more shocking, but usually in a bad way.
"How is your day going?" "Meh."
"Look at what this celebrity is wearing." "Geh!" -

Tue, August 25, 2009 - 5:35 PMYeah. "Gag" is onomatopoetic.
I've often wondered how to spell "Um" to indicate that rising tone, as in: "Umm, I'm gonna tell."
As opposed to the hesitation sound: "Um, what should we do?"
How would I indicate the inflection of the first sound standing alone? -

Re: how do you spell...
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 5:37 PMI think we actually pronounce "Eh" like we're struggling to take a shit. And it almost sounds like we insert an "n" in between the "e" and the "h." So it kinda sounds like "Enh" but shortened in our gut to sound like "Eh." -
