I was wondering what you all thought it means to be 'alive'?
What attributes does something have to have to be considered as possessing 'life'?
I'm sure every one of us could go look it up in the dictionary, but maybe we could stretch even further and encounter creative postulates of this meaning...?

Re: 'Alive'
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 7:03 AMBefore we go into the creative interpretations, I wanted to post only part that stuck with me of what my college sophmore biology professor said about the subject:
He had a fresh banana and asked us if it was still alive. We went through various factors, but what ended up being the defining one was respiration. If you put that banana in a sealed plastic bag, you would find that it is still breathing and, thus, still alive.
The thought that my food is still breathing occasionally freaks me out a bit now when I eat raw fruit or veggies. Sure, vegetarians complain that we eat meat, but at least we kill it before we eat it. ^_~ -

Re: 'Alive'
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 7:43 AMIf you want to go that far then the atoms in the meat and dairy that you eat is also alive.
The life in the fruit and veges doesn't stop when you eat it, it adds to the life of your beautiful body.
I became a vege mainly because of the cruelty involved in factory farming, plus i was raised on a farm and got to play with all the animals. I no longer can let myself eat something that plays and loves to be played with.
However I am not an activist, but if you must eat meat, make sure it was treated well.

Sat, April 5, 2008 - 6:25 AMI meant the comment about vegetarians as a light-hearted joke, it was in no way meant as disrespect or a reason to not be vegetarian. I'm sorry if the winking smiley didn't convey that well enough, it's hard to show the correct tone in this electronic format.
I try to generally not eat too much meat (not with every meal, not as large of a portion as people seem to think you need, etc.) and I do prefer to buy organic and from companies that treat the animals well before they become dinner. (And I refuse to ever eat Kobe beef). -

Sat, April 5, 2008 - 8:06 AMOh I didn't take offense to that comment, people are people and I would not want to shove my beliefs on anyone. I just like to share. -

Re: 'Alive'
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 2:46 PMI happen to think that alive is an important word. Nothing I could neglect. I think it means the vital signs work, including the brain. If someone ever said an animal has a little brain, then remember they have eyes, nerves and reactions. Reptiles are cold blooded and insects will stay away from love. -

Re: 'Alive'
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 10:09 PMare telephone poles 'alive'?
What about cooked meat, or potato chips?
A house?
A planet?
-
-
Re: 'Alive'
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 10:15 PMYes,the atoms that make up that pole and that cooked meat, etc, etc, etc are alive, so I guess that whatever they make up is alive.
Everything is alive. -

Re: 'Alive'
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 11:20 PMthat's beautiful~
But what is it to be alive? -

science=knowing
so something alive knows something? -

Re: 'Alive'
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 6:17 AM"so something alive knows something?"
Well, that rules out a lot of people. ^_~
Would defining "alive" as "conciousness" rule out people who are in vegetable states? Also, I don't believe that things like cooked meat, telephone poles, and perhaps not even things like amoeba or insects have a conciousness. Salamander, could you expound a bit more on your two statements?

Re: 'Alive'
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:10 AMEverything alive knows its source. Maybe some relize it and some don't, but it is still known. -

Re: 'Alive'
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 10:28 AMI don't know if this makes sense in an intellectual way...but this image works for me..
fresh rain...
as in a light fresh rain on your face...something so "alive" about that. -
-
Re: 'Alive'
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:27 PMvery nice :)
poetic too~
I would agree that rain is 'alive'
But I'm not going to say what I think alive is, but fresh rain would be an interesting heart and thought experiment; how is fresh rain 'alive'?
-
Re: 'Alive'
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 8:56 PM"fresh rain"
Interesting take on the word alive. I was looking at it from a more biological perspective, but "alive" is also determined by the things that make you feel "alive" (sorry for the poor wording of the sentence).
Yes, fresh rain on your face is very alive. Personally for me, a thick fog is also alive. And fresh spring air coming in through the window while I nap on the couch. And hugs with friends. And creating anything artistic. ^_^

Re: 'Alive'
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:39 PMdoes it? know its source?
I ask about consciousness, because it seems to have fast become the new buzz word, and maybe a little dogmatic in the free-thinking community. I've decided to forgo using the word, as a personal choice, to get behind the meaning of the word. What is consciousness? "knows its source"? A lot of people don't know the source of their water, and that's something vital that keeps us alive. I prefer the term 'intelligence', because atoms, droplets, people, move about in a way that follows particular patterns. What is commonly defined as 'life' possesses DNA, a form of intelligence in the body that governs how the body is kept alive and constantly maintained. But DNA is a collection of molecules, and of that: atoms, which have somehow found a way to store information, and reproduce the pattern. Maybe this is the consciousness you are referring to, but what then of 'unconsciousness', because I can personally attest that there are some things I am unconscious of: my awareness can only juggle so much information, all the rest is 'beneath my notice'. If aliveness, then, is defined as 'consciousness', then I am only about 1% alive, even as I strive to be as conscious of as many things as I can. "Intelligence" is 'the ability to make connections', and as to that, I think all matter can do that: relate. This is why I think John Lennon had a good point when he said, "all we need is love"; there is something fundamental about relationship that I think can span the whole universe, and poetically be described as 'love'. -

Re: 'Alive'
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 8:12 PMnothing better than that....
nothing feels as alive as feeling love for someone...and not just, you know, the romantic kind.....whether it is a parent, grandparent, whatever...no better feeling than that...
and, yeah, I agree, spiritual feelings are superior to intellectual ideas.....no comparison.

what atoms eat
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 11:42 AMI heard an adage from a philosophy professor that seems to suit my understanding of...the universe. "Life eats life". So, atoms would probably eat each other, or rather the energy that keeps them in motion, perhaps? They definitely takes in and release energy, which seems to parallel what humans do when they eat: taking in matter that is capable of breaking down into simpler constituent molecules, pulling off the hydrogen ions, and bouncing on down through the folds of the mitochondria; meanwhile, the fiber=composed of sugars but not able to break down in body passes through and out, onward for some other life-form to enjoy.
Maybe there's more to what atoms eat--what do you think? -

Re: what atoms eat
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 5:02 PMsat behind a 9-month-old baby today with eyes so open & ready to receive every bit of information & attention in front of him.
he was bouncing and waving and giggling at the smallest expression or touch.
he felt hunger in his belly, so he cried & was comforted at once, getting love & nourishment from mom.
after a few moments he was up & ready to explore his world (his hands in his mouth, the lights above his head, the faces all around).
i think he was the most *alive* little person i've ran into all day. ahhh, babies.
