Shpilkis
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 8:00 PM
Shpilkis are pins.
"Shpilkis in tuchus" means "pins in the butt". You'd basicly be saying someone can't sit still.
Idiomatically it does become like "ants in the pants". -

Re: *new* favorite word
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 4:22 PM"Yen", as in to long for, is one of my new favorite words. I was looking at a word list and found the word. The funny thing was that I remember an episode from "Fraiser" where Fraiser uses the word to in a commerical he's doing for a chinese restaurant. Of course, Roz thinks he's using "yen" as in the Japanese currency. Funny what you come across. -

Re: *new* favorite word
Sat, September 15, 2007 - 7:05 AMAs a child I was fascinated with words that started down in my belly and ended with tongue and teeth. "Wondering" fascinated me because I experienced it as a great example of onomatopoeia ; based on the sounds "ONE" and Ringggggg. Wand-er-ingggg held magic sounds too.
Age 7 and 8 my favorite words were "elbow" and "mayonnaise" - because of the breathing involved and the elegant softness of the tongue. I shared these words with all and asked others what their favorite words were too. I was shocked when someone told me they liked the word "stigmatic". Didn't know or care what it meant; just resented the forced spitting toothiness of it. I felt evil lurking in stillettos, stingers, style and stint. as well. -

Mon, September 17, 2007 - 3:15 AMat this moment my new favorite word is *trust* like someone wants to start a BIG conversation about that on another tribe I am in. I know who I trust, what makes me trust, why should I trust, how do I show trust, where am I trusted. Plus I wish I had a big trust fund to rely on and I wish I could trust my spelling skills. Trust is an interesting word for me right now and I am considering posting a thread about it on another tribe. One that has nothing to do the original subject. Trust. -

Re: *new* favorite word
Mon, September 17, 2007 - 10:41 PMRight now I really like *disintermediation* It reminds me of "Antidisestablishmentarianism"
And *muddlingup* is a word that I find fun and fascinating.
*Vituperative* is vocab word of the day. It is not a favorite word for me. But came across it recently and wonder how often I've overlooked such and important word.

Sun, November 11, 2007 - 11:32 AMI've always defined sesquipedalianism as "the use of a big word where a diminutive one will suffice."
In related news, I won an 8th grade spelling contest with that word. As a result, I'll never forget it.

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 4:46 PM*Muddlingup* still makes me laugh and I like it. Was watching the weather channel and it was all muddledup w/adds for Serve-pro.
Today it is *discursive* "The American ideal of discursive clarity." Is the sentence I found it used in, I can hardly wait to use this word myself.

Offal- Refuse, rubbish or waste parts especially of a butchered animal (Specifically because my 2nd graders love the grossness of it. Oh, I loved watching their faces when I told them what it meant. Almost as good as the chamber pot!) That offal smelled awful... (sorry)
Dipsy-doodle- To move in or follow a zig-zag course
Mote- as in a dust mote (Mostly because one of my kids actually independently wrote a poem about one after I taught the word, and it's a great word family word.) :)

Sat, September 29, 2007 - 1:25 PMMotherfucker is and remains my very favorite word, but my new 2nd favorite is apotropaic. Per Dictionary.com, it means "intended to ward off evil." I read it in Christopher Hitchen's review of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows on NewYorkTimes.com. Now, there's a man with an impressive vocabulary! -
