Etymology of Snog

I was startled to find that even the OED does not give an origin for this word. Beyond an approximation of the time of origin (mid-1950's) I can find nothing about the roots of this word anywhere. Any ideas?

The word seems to have originated in the UK, particularly England. It's possibly onomatopoedic, which might explain why there is no formal origin of the word.

My friend (not in this tribe) offered up this:
The unabridged OED (1890-1930 original) gives "snog" as an adjective meaning sleek, neat, tidy, with etymology of Scots origin.

But I've still not found anything on when the definition changed or the slang came about...

    Good question, E.J.!
