the *what* is WHAT?

topic posted Wed, March 12, 2008 - 9:03 AM by  Ms.Dynomite
has anyone else seen these Honda ads on TV or on tribe?
wordfreaks.tribe.net/photos/...b4ba4e05

seriously, what the hell does that even mean? is that even English? is it supposed to be some English-as-a-second-language joke?
this not only makes me never want to buy a Honda, but also makes me want to personally slap everyone at the ad agency and the Honda corp.

If this ad ran in English speaking countries, they have no excuse for it because they have god knows how much money they spend on marketing and I'm sure they employ people in their marketing department who are actually from the individual countries where the ads run.

If the ad just ran in Japan (and they do have a lot of English ads over there), then I see no problems with the it; it could make sense in their vernacular.

      Jennifer,
the ads ARE running in English speaking countries. :) They've been all over the U.S. for awhile with billboards, TV ads and banners ads. It's running all over Tribe right now.

Gotcha. They have no excuse then. ^_^ Sorry, I don't get any T.V. channels so I never see any commercials and I haven't seen the billboards for this.

I hear you. If they would even add "a," as in the car is a go, that would sound a little better.

It does remind me of the old horror stories of incompetent foreign marketing. Like trying to sell a nova in Spanish-speaking countries, it's a no-go!

    huh

I just looked at an ad I maybe never would have seen otherwise. And here we are having a conversation about it.

    Maybe it worked.

Perhaps, but there's a difference between catching someone's attention enough to look at the ad and making an ad that persuades you to buy something. This ad doesn't make me want to buy a Fit and more or any less.

It's like with all the ads that use sex to try to sell you something. Studies have shown that people often remember the ad itself but not the product featured in the ad. ^_^

      LanSing,
I think that as Jennifer said, we're not talking about it in a "how cool, I want one" way. it's not a viral type of discussion. it's more a "could they be more stupid?" impression, that generally doesn't make one's advertising dollars worthwhile. ;)

I'm afraid LanSing is correct - it made Ms D sit up and take notice. That was the point - using bad grammar to be noticeable, and to look, in some way, 'cool'. For wordies like us, it's chalk on blackboard. But for everyone else, it's just something that sticks in the mind. Remember the old canard.... there's no such thing as bad publicity. Any publicity is good publicity. (Except of course as Heather said, when it's the famous no-go Chevy!!!)
