I grew up watching every single version of A Christmas Carol that has ever existed. (Trust me, I'm positive I've seen every one made prior to 1990. Since then, I'm not so sure.)
Every one has different versions of the party games played by nephew Fred and his friends. In one of them, I don't remember if it was the George C. Scott or if it was the 1970's version, had the party-goers playing a word game called The Minister's Cat.
The Rules:
You must use this sentence: The minister's cat is a _____________ cat.
You must select an adjective to fill in the blank that starts with the next letter in the alphabet after the person before you. The first person uses an "A" adjective, the next uses a "B" adjective, and so on.
You may use a different article to fit the sentence: a, an or the – if it fits or makes your sentence more interesting. (But it's always THE Minister)
In the movie, there was a time issue, we can't really do that here, so I'm leaving that out.
I'm also allowing any length of adjective – from 1 syllable to, I don't know, 4, 5, 6? As long as it is only a SINGLE word.
You may do more than one in a post, but you may not string all the adjectives into one sentence. Each must have its own sentence.
I'm not going to harp on punctuation. (THIS time) :P
I think that's all the rules… if others present themselves later, I'll add them in.

Wed, December 3, 2008 - 10:23 AMThanks for the memories.
I remember the show, and I remember laughing at how antiquated that game seemed, and then being very bored in the back seat of the station wagon one night and playing it and realizing how fun it is...
the thing is, in the film, you only have two hand-claps in which to come up with your line. This seems a little too easy... maybe if we promised to come up with our adjective in less than a second after reading the last post?
The minister's cat is a dingle-berried cat.

Actually, JM – I believe in the game as it was shown in the movie, the whole sentence takes place in a slap-clap-snap-snap rhythm. Slap your hands on your legs, clap your hands together, snap the right fingers, snap the left fingers.
Slap – The Mini–
clap – ster's cat is
snap – an adjective
snap – cat -

BTW, not that anyone really cares, but I verified over the weekend that this game appeared in the 1970's musical A Christmas Carol with Albert Finney. It also includes the song, "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. That's the nicest thing that anybody's ever done for me," sung when the town hears that Scrooge is dead. -

What makes you think we don't care? I think that is a lovely tidbit of information that I plan to share with the family when there is a lull in conversation over the holidays. Maybe I will suggest we play this game as well.I was in the mood for an old musical over the weekend (not that anyone cares!) and borrowed "Oliver Twist" from the library and it is dark and gloomy and not a musical at all. I should have gotten A Christmas Carol.
Carry on. -

I wasn't trying to imply there's anything wrong with caring about which Christmas Carol movie this game came from. I thought I was a little more concerned about figuring it out than I needed to be. And I admit it's a little weird to be a defacto "authority" on the Christmas Carol movies front. If anyone has questions about any, let me know. I'll try to answer them.

Fri, December 19, 2008 - 7:44 PMThe Minister's cat is a juicy cat.
This is driving me crazy. Every time I read the lyrics put up here it reminds me of a movie I can only vaguely remember. I think there's a scene where some very poor people open imaginary gifts, and then pretend to have gotten their most wished for item. Was it from this movie, or does anyone recognize what movie it was?

Sat, December 20, 2008 - 3:29 AMThe song is from Scrooge
www.youtube.com/watch
www.youtube.com/watch
Here are the lyrics:
Tom Jenkins
Ladies and gentlemen
On behalf of all the people who have assembled here
I would merely like to mention if I may
That our unanimous attitude
Is one of lasting gratitude
For what our friend has done for us today
And therefore I would simply like to say
Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me
I may sound Double-Dutch
But my delight is such
I feel as if a losing war's been won for me
And if I had a flag I'd hang my flag out
To add a sort of final victory touch
But since I left my flag at home
I'll simply have to say
Thank you very, very, very much!
Company
Thank you very, very, very much!
Tom Jenkins
Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me
It sounds a bit bizarre
But things the way they are
I feel as if another life's begun for me
Company
And if I had a cannon I would fire it
To add a sort of celebration touch
But since I left my cannon at home
I'll simply have to say
Scrooge
Thank you very, very, very much!
Company
Thank you very, very, very much!
Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me
It isn't everyday
Good fortune comes my way
I never thought the future would be fun for me
And if I had a bugle I would blow it
To add a sort of 'ow's-your-father touch
But since I left my bugle at home
I'll simply have to say
Thank you very, very, very much
Scrooge
No, my friends, it is I who should be thankful to you!
Company
For he's a jolly good fellow
For he's a jolly good fellow
Scrooge
For I'm a jolly good fellow
Company
And so say all of us
Thank you very, very much
(Tom Jenkins: Thank you very much!)
Thank you very, very much
(Tom Jenkins: That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me)
Thank you very, very much
(Tom Jenkins: The future looks all right)
Thank you very much
(Tom Jenkins: In fact it looks so bright)
Thank you very much
(Tom Jenkins: I feel as if they're polishing the sun for me)
Thank you very much
Thank you very much
Thank you very, very, very, very much
And if I had a drum I'd have to bang it!
To add a sort of rumty-tumty touch
But since I left my drum at home
I'll simply have to say
Thank you very, very, very much!
Thank you very, very, very much! -

Thanks everyone. I watched the video link, but I don't recall ever seeing that version of Scrooge or A Christmas Carol before. I've never seen Annie all the way through, just caught bits and pieces of it, so it could be from Annie. I don't think there was singing in the scene I'm remembering, but maybe. They would pretend to hold something in their hand and then describe it. Sure sounds like a musical. It could even be from Oliver! that I meantioned earlier. -

Don't remember that one being used yet.
So, watching the 1984 Christmas Carol on AMC last night… and even after all the ones I've watched there's still stuff I don't get.
Like, why is Scrooge always afraid of his own grave. I mean, yeah… we're never supposed to actually see it ourselves. But don't we all know that we will die sometime? Why is the grave so scary? I understand that you would be bothered that no one cares, or even that everyone is happy about it… but would that make the grave scary? -

Wed, December 24, 2008 - 1:03 PMThe minister's cat is a lousy cat.
I dunno. Why is Scooby-Doo crazy about Scooby snacks?
Why is Indiana Jones scared of snakes?
Why is Yogi Bear wild about picnic baskets?
I find the idea of looking at my own grave rather satisfying.
It's amazing how people leave that kind of decision up to someone else. -
