For the possessive:
United States'
or
United State's
or
United States's
?

Google isn't helpful. Evidently, they don't do searches for apostrophes.

As in belonging to the US, I would use United States'.

The United States' unemployment problem continues...

    Yeah...

I'm with you... but it's annoying me, this pluralization thing.
      For example:
The United States' unemployment problem reflects *their* previous president's policies...
      or
The United States' unemployment problem reflects *its* previous president's policies...

Um… what I have discovered is that it completely depends on the stylebook you choose to follow – or in some cases it depends on the company's branding choices.

Some style books prefer States' ; and others prefer States's.

And even if you use one style book, a company you work for may decide to use the other, regardless of the stylebook.

I generally tend to prefer to "talk around" it, so that the apostrophe becomes a non-issue. "The political climate of the United States" rather than "the United States' political climate."

And… um… plural or not, you have the same issue anytime the word ends in S. Laos, Jesus, cats – broadway play? or in the alley?

Go with what "feels better" to you… and be prepared to be edited.
